Yosemite National Park

We stayed at a boondocking spot outside of the park. I highly suggest trying to book a spot inside the park. It takes an hour to get to the valley from the entrance of the park. Wow, I know.

Day 1: Sentinel Dome to Taft Point

Our four-day adventure near Yosemite National Park kicked off with a stunning hike from Sentinel Dome to Taft Point, spanning just over 5 miles. We took it slow, ensuring we'd be at Taft Point by sunset. And what a show the sun put on for us that evening, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink.

Day 2: Lower Yosemite Falls and Biking

Saturday in Yosemite meant an early start to secure a parking spot in the valley. Trust us; the early bird gets the worm when it comes to parking here. Once we found a spot, we grabbed our gear and set out around 8:30am. A word of advice for national parks: bring a bike or rent one. It's a game-changer for exploring the vast terrain. We pedaled over to Lower Yosemite Falls, marveled at its beauty, and then made our way to Curry Village for some much-needed coffee and sustenance.

In the afternoon, we decided to relax, leisurely biking around the park to soak in the breathtaking views. Eventually, we found a perfect spot to set up our hammocks, sip on kombucha, and unwind. Later that day, we received the thrilling news that we secured a spot to hike Half Dome. We were ecstatic and decided to head back early to prepare for the 16-mile journey ahead. But before leaving the park, we couldn't resist checking out El Capitan, where climbers were scaling its heights. We watched for a while, returned to camp, enjoyed dinner, packed our bags, and set the alarm for 4:30 am.

Day 3: Half Dome

We rose promptly at 4:30 am, our excitement making it easy to get up. By 5 am, we were en route, enjoying breakfast on the way (chia seed pudding I had prepared the night before). We parked in Curry Village and biked to the trailhead, about a mile from the parking lot. The Half Dome trail was challenging, to say the least. If you opt for the Mist Trail, be prepared for a nearly 15-mile journey with a 4,800-foot elevation gain. The average duration for this trail is 10 to 12 hours, and we completed it in about 10 and a half hours.

The trail begins with a steep ascent leading to Vernal Falls. Here, you'll experience a unique hiking encounter as the trail takes you very close to the falls, where you might even get soaked in heavy water flow. Be cautious; the stairs can be slippery. Afterward, the trail briefly flattens along the Merced River, surrounded by an old-growth forest, giant sequoias, and wildflowers.

A few miles later, you'll reach the base of Sub-Dome, a smaller peak before Half Dome. Sub-Dome's ascent is challenging, with paved switchbacks leading three-quarters of the way up, and the final stretch involves scrambling up granite. At the top, you'll catch your first close-up view of the cables leading to the summit of Half Dome.

The famous Half Dome cables are the steepest and most challenging part of the hike, taking you 400 feet up the granite face. It's a thrilling and intense experience as you ascend a rock wall at a 46-degree incline.

The strenuousness of the hike culminates in the reward of an awe-inspiring panoramic view from the summit, arguably the most breathtaking vista in Yosemite National Park. After taking in the stunning valley, you'll prepare for the long, downhill journey back to the trailhead.

Once you've conquered the 15-mile trek, treat yourself to a well-deserved Half Dome Pizza at Curry Village. Trust us; it's the best pizza you'll ever taste.
